“If my tooth doesn’t hurt, I don’t have a cavity.”
Cavities don’t always cause pain in the early stages. By the time you do feel pain, the decay will have likely reached the deeper layers of your tooth, possibly requiring a filling, crown, or even a root canal. Regular checkups are key to help catch cavities early on so you can reduce your chances of having to do such procedures.
“Only sugar causes cavities.”
While sugary foods do contribute to cavities, the real culprit is the buildup of acid-producing bacteria in your mouth. This bacteria feeds on sugar and carbohydrates from food you eat, producing acid that wears down enamel. Be consistent in your brushing, flossing and even hydration to keep the bacteria at bay and reduce your chances of cavities.
“Brushing harder will prevent cavities.”
Brushing too hard can actually damage your enamel and gums, making your teeth more vulnerable to decay. Brushing should be done in circular motions with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Focus on consistent brushing, flossing, and mouthwash to effectively prevent cavities.
Final Notes
This list is far from exhaustive and is not meant to be all inclusive. My intention was to show how easy it is to come to believe dental myths wholeheartedly without realizing they could be completely baseless. Even worse if you take these myths to heart at the expense of your health (not to mention wallet).
Do yourself a favor and bring all your questions and other myths to your next dental appointment. Our office is a safe space for all questions and concerns – there’s no such thing as a dumb question in our book. We’d love to provide you with evidence-based facts and guidance!
